2 Responses to Artificial life only five years away…really

  1. It is interesting that the cited researchers all start with concentrating on replicating the genome and look at metabolism as only of secondary importance. They all seem to ascribe to the “checklist” theory of life, that if a creation satisfies a certain list of attributes, then it is alive.

  2. It’s a bit like machine translation of human language, which has been about five years in the future for as long as I can remember, that is to say since some time in the 1960s. To my mind that’s a much easier problem than creating life. I agree with Jeff that that the importance of metabolism is usually forgotten completely.
